    Brachiosaurus

Brachiosaurus was a huge, plant-eating dinosaur that had a giraffe-like stance. It is one of the tallest and largest dinosaurs yet found, and may have lived in Earth-shaking herds. This giant sauropod lived during the middle to late Jurassic period, about 156-145 million years ago.

Anatomy: Brachiosaurus walked on four legs and, like the other Brachiosaurids and unlike most dinosaurs, its front legs were longer than its hind legs. Brachiosaurus was about 85 feet long (26 m). It had a claw on the first toe of each front foot and claws on the first three toes of each rear foot (each foot had five toes with fleshy pads). Like other Brachiosaurids, it had chisel-like teeth, its nostrils were on the top of its head, and it had large nasal openings indicating that it may have had a good sense of smell. This plant-eater had 26 teeth on its top jaw and 26 on the bottom for a total of 52 teeth towards the front of the mouth.

Fossils and Name: Brachiosaurus was first found in the Grand River Valley, in western Colorado, USA, in 1900. This incomplete skeleton was described by paleontologist Elmer S. Riggs, who named Brachiosaurus in 1903. In 1909, Werner Janensch found many Brachiosaurus fossils in Tanzania, Africa. Many Brachiosaurus fossils have been found, in North America and Africa.

    Acrocanthosaurus

Acrocanthosaurus was a large, meat-eating dinosaur. Acrocanthosaurus means “high-spined lizard.” No one knows what color this, or any dinosaur, was.

Anatomy: Acrocanthosaurus was 30-40 feet (9-12 m) long and weighed about 5,000 pounds (2300 kg). This theropod dinosaur had a big head, with a 4.5-foot (1.4 m) long skull and 68 thin, sharp, serrated teeth. It had 17-inch (43 cm) spikes extending from its vertebrae along the neck, back, and tail. These spikes may have been covered with skin, forming a thick, fleshy sail along its back. This predator had powerful arms; each hand had three fingers equipped with long, sickle-like claws.

When it Lived: Acrocanthosaurus lived during the early Cretaceous period, about 115-105 million years ago.

Fossils: Acrocanthosaurus fossils have been found in Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah (in the USA). Many fossilized tracks have also been found.

    Arsinoitherium

Arsinoitherium was an early, rhinoceros-like mammal that lived during the early Oligocene (about 38 to 23 million years ago). Although it looked like a rhinoceros, it is more closely related to elephants. Fossils of Arsinoitherium have been found in Faiyum, Egypt.

Anatomy: Arsinoitherium was a large quadruped that had 5-toed feet and a small brain. It had 2 huge, conical, hollow horns made of bone on its snout. It was about 11.5 feet (3.5 m) long and about 6 ft (1.8 m) tall at the shoulder.

Diet: Arsinoitherium was an herbivore, a plant-eater. It may have grazed in forests near rivers.

Classification: Class Mammalia (mammals), Subclass Theria, Infraclass Eutheria (placental mammals) Order Embrithopoda, Family Arsinoitheriidae, Genus Arsinoitherium.

    Barosaurus

Barosaurus was a huge, long-necked, plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the Jurassic period, about 156 to 145 million years ago. The name Barosaurus means “Heavy Lizard”; this giant was named by paleontologist Othniel C. Marsh in 1890.

Anatomy: Barosaurus was huge and slow-moving. It had a long neck, small head, long, whip-like tail, and small brain. This diplodocid sauropod was about 66 to 88 feet (20-27 m) long, weighing roughly 44 tons (40000 kg). Its femur (thigh bone) was 8.2 ft (2.5 m) long – bigger than a human being. Barosaurus’ primary defense against predators was its size.

Fossils: Barosaurus fossils have been found in western North America and East Africa.

    Brachiosaurus Skeleton

Brachiosaurus was a giant, long-necked, plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the Jurassic period, 156-145 million years ago.

Anatomy: This sauropod had a bulky body, a small head, blunt teeth, and a short, thick tail. Its front legs were longer than its hind legs; this is unusual for dinosaurs. Brachiosaurus was up to 40-50 feet tall (12-16 m) and about 85 feet (26 m) long. It weighed roughly 50-80 tons.

Fossils: Brachiosaurus was named in 1903 by paleontologist Elmer S. Riggs. The type species is B. altithorax. Fossils have been found in North America and Africa.

    Fabrosaurus

Fabrosaurus was a small, early, plant-eating dinosaur that lived in Africa during the late Triassic period and early Jurassic period, roughly 208 to 196 million years ago. Very little is known about Fabrosaurus since only a portion of a jaw has been found. Fabrosaurus is a dubious genus; it may be the same dinosaur as Lesothosaurus.

Anatomy: This ornithischian (bird-hipped) dinosaur had small teeth in its jaws. It may have had a horn-covered beak. Fabrosaurus probably walked on two long legs and had two short arms. It was roughly 3 feet (1 m) long.

Diet: Fabrosaurus was an herbivore, a plant-eater.

Fossils: Fabrosaurus was named in 1964 by paleontologist Leonard Ginsburg to honor the French scientist Jean Henri Fabre (a colleague of Ginsburg’s who was on the dig that discovered Fabrosaurus). The type species is F. australis. Fossils of this primitive dinosaur have been found in Lesotho, South Africa.
